Canine hydrotherapy can be used for many reasons it may speed recovery time after an operation or can slow the progression of a degenerative condition.

It can be used as a pre-operative fitness regime which allows a dog to maintain their condition and muscle mass before an operation allowing them to exercise where they would not normally be able to do so. If a congenital condition has been identified in a puppy,  surgery may not be possible until the they are physically mature enough. The period after surgery hydrotherapy can be employed to decrease recovery time build muscle mass and maintain the dog's condition.

Impairments to motor function can be caused by spinal injuries or surgery, these can be treated and the degree of mobility increased by  allowing the dog to exercise in water. The water provides support whist allowing the dog to exercise its muscles in a warm, weightless environment this promotes nerve regeneration to take place. The weightless environment also helps degenerative conditions where normal exercising is difficult placing pressure on joints and limbs and may aggravate some conditions, hydrotherapy can be used in these cases to allow the dog to exercise and reducing the pressure on the affected areas.

Hydrotherapy can assist with obese dogs building stamina, fitness and helping to lose weight as a result of being able to exercise in a environment which reduces weight their limbs and joints bear. Hydrotherapy can also be used as a general fitness for dogs, or where they are able to burn up excess energy.
